Why Round Stock Spins When Bundle Cutting on a Bandsaw
If you've ever tried to cut multiple pieces of round stock at once on a bandsaw, you've probably seen this happen.
The blade touches the top piece… and it starts spinning.

In this test, I loaded 2 pieces of threaded rod into the bandsaw vise and clamped them just like you would for a normal cut. The lower piece washeld reasonably well, but the piece sitting on top wasn't directly supported by the vise.
As soon as the blade made contact, it wanted to rotate.
That's one of the frustrating parts of trying to bundle-cut round material.
Why does the top piece move?
When several pieces of round stock are grouped together, the vise can't always apply clamping force evenly to every individual piece.
The lower pieces are supported by the vise and each other, while the pieces toward the top of the bundle may only be held by contact with the material underneath them.
Then the bandsaw blade applies force.
Instead of staying locked in place, that unsupported round stock can roll, shift, or spin.
With threaded rod, the effect is especially easy to see, but the same basic problem can show up when cutting round bar, tubing, and other grouped material.
The usual workaround
A common solution is to tape or strap the bundle together before loading it into the saw.
And it works.
But it also adds another step every time you load material.
Tape the bundle. Load it. Make the cut. Remove the tape. Repeat.
When you're cutting a lot of small parts, those extra steps start adding up.
That's exactly the kind of repetitive shop problem I wanted to eliminate when I started developing the Bandsaw Grouping Jaw System.
Supporting the material individually
Instead of relying on the pieces to clamp against one another, the grouping jaws use size-specific inserts to locate and support the individual pieces of material.

I repeated the same threaded-rod test with the grouping jaws installed.
This time, the material stayed grouped and supported while the blade passed through the bundle.
No taping the rods together first.
No loose top piece spinning when the blade hit it.
Just load the material, clamp the vise, and cut.
Why I built the Bandsaw Grouping Jaws
Like a lot of the tools I make, this started with a problem I kept running into in the shop.
I wanted a faster way to repeatedly cut groups of small round material without having to tape, zip-tie, or manually arrange the bundle every time.
The result became a modular system with removable inserts for different material sizes and group quantities.
That means you can leave the main jaw bodies on the saw and swap inserts depending on what you're cutting.
For shops making repeated batches of pins, spacers, threaded rod, round bar, tubing, or other small components, eliminating even a small setup step can make a noticeable difference over hundreds of cuts.
Sometimes the simplest test explains it best
I can explain how the jaws work all day, but watching that top piece of threaded rod spin as soon as the blade hits it probably explains the problem better than I ever could.
Then you see the same cut (double the quantity actually) with the material properly supported.
That's the entire reason this system exists. Easier setup. Faster production.
